Designed exclusively for Foreign Service kids, our engaging program aims to enhance and maintain your existing proficiency in French and Spanish while fostering a vibrant virtual community.

Course Title: Beyond Borders, FRENCH Language class – Level 1

Course Description:

This ten-week French course is designed for lower intermediate young learners with a focus on developing communicative abilities for practical use. The curriculum emphasizes a fast-paced learning experience through engaging activities, interactive discussions, and real-world applications. Each class will explore various language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while integrating cultural aspects to enhance the overall language learning experience.

SESSIONS, OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES 

Session 1: Greetings, Introductions, Farewells

·         Objectives:

·         Assess initial language level and identify learning gaps.

·         Master basic social interactions: introducing oneself, asking about well-being, and polite farewells.

·         Understand the nuances of politeness in French culture (using “vous” vs. “tu”).

·         Activities:

·         Icebreaker: Self-introductions and sharing personal interests.

·         Role-plays at various social settings like a sports club or a birthday party.

·         Pronunciation practice using interactive methods.

·         Online resource: TV5 Monde Ados for real-world interaction scenarios.

Session 2: Family and Relationships

·         Objectives:

·         Describe family relationships and discuss professions.

·         Engage in conversations about personal living spaces and family dynamics.

·         Activities:

·         Vocabulary review and practice focused on family terms.

·         Create a visual family tree.

·         Role-play discussing family relationships.

·         Online resource for describing family scenarios.

Session 3: Calendar and Events

·         Objectives:

·         Describe daily routines and notable life events.

·         Learn to express time, days, and months in French.

·         Activities:

·         Create vocabulary flashcards for daily routines.

·         Dialogue practice describing personal routines.

·         Online resource: French dialogue simulations on TV5 Monde.

Session 4: Hobbies and Leisure

·         Objectives:

·         Discuss hobbies and leisure activities, contrasting past and present interests.

·         Activities:

·         Group discussion on favorite hobbies.

·         Expression practice talking about personal interests.

·         Online vocabulary review related to hobbies on TV5 Monde.

Session 5: Food and Meals

·         Objectives:

·         Acquire food-related vocabulary and phrases.

·         Discuss various meals and culinary preferences.

·         Activities:

·         Pronunciation practice with new vocabulary.

·         Interactive activities exploring French cuisine.

Session 6: Transportation and Travel

·         Objectives:

·         Learn vocabulary for travel and transportation.

·         Share and discuss personal travel experiences.

·         Activities:

·         Map activity practicing giving and asking for directions in French.

·         Storytelling about travel experiences focusing on tense usage.

·         Online resource for vocabulary enhancement on TV5 Monde.

Session 7: Shopping and Clothing

·         Objectives:

·         Master shopping-related vocabulary and transactional dialogues.

·         Discuss fashion trends within French-speaking cultures.

·         Activities:

·         Introduction and practice with clothing vocabulary.

·         Shopping role-play in a French setting.

·         Fashion show activity describing outfits.

Session 8: Festivals and Celebrations

·         Objectives:

·         Learn about key festivals and cultural celebrations in French-speaking areas.

·         Activities:

·         Research and present a specific cultural celebration.

·         Online resource exploring holidays and celebrations on TV5 Monde.

Session 9: Health and Wellness

·         Objectives:

·         Acquire vocabulary related to health, wellness, and medical situations.

·         Discuss healthy lifestyle choices and preventive measures.

·         Activities:

·         Role-play a doctor's visit.

·         Group discussions on healthy living in breakout rooms, reporting back to the main session.

·         Online resource: Health and wellness dialogues on TV5 Monde.

Session 10: Final Cultural Project

·         Objectives:

·         Apply language skills in a final creative project.

·         Reflect on the personal language learning journey and set future goals.

·         Activities:

·         Option to create a personal presentation, a short theater play, or a song using learned language skills.

·         Reflective discussion on language growth and future learning targets.

·         Social conversation practice to reinforce language structures learned during the course.
