Embark on an exciting linguistic journey this summer with the Foreign Service Youth Foundation (FSYF) Virtual Language Clubs! Designed exclusively for Foreign Service kids, our engaging program aims to enhance and maintain your existing proficiency in French and Spanish while fostering a vibrant virtual community.

Course Description:

This ten-week Spanish course is designed for intermediate young learners with a focus on developing communicative abilities for practical use. The curriculum emphasizes a fast-paced learning experience through engaging activities, interactive discussions, and real-world applications. Each class will explore various language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while integrating cultural aspects to enhance the overall language learning experience.

Session 1: Getting to know each other

Objectives:

  • Present vocabulary and structures to introduce, describe and compare yourself and others.
  • Learn how to introduce oneself and others social gatherings.
  • Practice pronunciation through interactive activities (emphasis on the isolation of individual vowel sounds and diphthongs.)
  • Establish the class level and learning gaps to provide support in areas where the communication is hindered by lack of vocabulary or grammar structures.

Activities:

  • Icebreaker: Introduce yourself to the class and share a fun fact about yourself.
  • Role Play: Simulation of a social gathering where we are learning about our classmates and then reporting the information to the class (students work in pairs in breakout rooms).
  • Online Resource: Distributed in class

Session 2: Daily Routine and Activities

Objectives:

  • Describe daily routines and activities in Spanish (focus on verb conjugation).
  • Expand vocabulary related to daily life.
  • Develop conversational skills through paired activities.

Activities:

  • Bingo Vocabulary Flashcards: Daily routine words.
  • Pair Work: Describe your daily routine to a partner.
  • Online Resource: Distributed in class

Session 3: Food and Restaurants

Objectives:

  • Learn food-related vocabulary and phrases.
  • Practice ordering food in a restaurant setting.
  • Explore cultural aspects of Spanish cuisine.

Activities:

  • Food vocabulary played in pairs.
  • Role Play: Order food in Spanish.
  • Talking about your favorite foods.

Session 4: Hobbies and Leisure Activities

Objectives:

  • Discuss hobbies and leisure activities in Spanish.
  • Expand vocabulary related to interests (focused on contrasting past hobbies and present ones).
  • Engage in group discussions about favorite activities.

Activities:

  • Group Discussion: Share and discuss hobbies.
  • Creative Writing: Write a paragraph about your favorite hobby.
  • Online Resource: Distributed in class

Session 5: Travel and Transportation

Objectives:

  • Learn vocabulary related to travel and transportation.
  • Practice giving and receiving directions.
  • Discuss travel experiences in Spanish.

Activities:

  • Map Activity: Give directions in Spanish.
  • Storytelling: Share a travel experience (focus on the use of preterite).
  • Online Resource: Distributed in class

Session 6: Family and Relationships

Objectives:

Introduce family-related vocabulary.

  • Describe family members and relationships (focus on the use of Ser and Estar).
  • Engage in conversation about family dynamics.

Activities:

  • Review the family vocabulary (paired activity)
  • Family Tree Project: Create a visual representation.
  • Role Play: Discuss family relationships.
  • Online Resource: Distributed in class

Session 7: Health and Wellness

Objectives:

  • Learn vocabulary related to health and wellness.
  • Discuss healthy habits and lifestyles (focus on the use of two verb structures).
  • Role-play common medical scenarios.

Activities:

  • Dialogues: Role-play a visit to the doctor.
  • Group Discussion: Healthy lifestyle choices (paired activity in breakout rooms and then report findings in main room).
  • Online Resource: Distributed in class

Session 8: Shopping and Clothing

Objectives:

  • Explore shopping-related vocabulary.
  • Practice shopping dialogues and transactions (review of gender of nouns and numbers).
  • Discuss fashion trends in Spanish-speaking countries.

Activities:

  • Introduction of clothing vocabulary and creation of a personalized vocabulary list.
  • Shopping Role Play: Buying clothes in Spanish.
  • Fashion Show: Describe and discuss outfits.
  • Online Resource: Distributed in class

Session 9: Festivals and Celebrations

Objectives:

  • Learn about traditional festivals and celebrations in Spanish-speaking cultures.
  • Discuss and compare cultural celebrations.

Activities:

  • Research Project: Explore and present a specific cultural celebration.
  • Online Resource: Distributed in class

Session 10: Final Project and Reflection

Objectives:

  • Apply language skills in a final project.
  • Reflect on personal language learning journey.
  • Celebrate achievements and set language-learning goals.

Activities:

  • Final Project: Create a presentation about you using the vocabulary and structures learned in class.
  • Reflection: Discuss personal growth in language proficiency.
  • Social conversation in Spanish to practice learned structures.
