    FSYF invites repatriating middle school students to join us for a workshop designed to help empower them with tools for their re-entry process.  We'll brainstorm strategies for adjusting to life in American middle schools and coping skills needed for a successful year. Participants will also have the opportunity to develop a support network of FS peers.

    Jessica Muse of Modern Muse Education will facilitate this session. 
     
    This is an activity-based workshop, with an ice cream social at the conclusion of the program.

    Fees and Payment:

    FSYF Members:  $10 per student

    FSYF Non Members:  $20 per student

    FSYF invites parents of repatriating middle school students to join us for a workshop designed to help them become familiar with American middle school life and local teen social culture.  Parents will be exposed to the latest research and literature regarding reverse culture shock and have an opportunity to speak with a panel of parents and educators about re-entry issues.

    Moderator:
    Kim DeBlauw, FSO and FSYF Board Member
     
    Description:    
    The goal of this program is to expose parents to the latest research and literature addressing topics related to Third Culture Kids (TCKs) and the reverse culture shock they will experience to varying degrees as they transition into middle school in the U.S..  Parents will have an opportunity to discuss strategies to support their child, network with other Foreign Service parents, and  receive advice from parents and educational professionals. Light refreshments will be served.  This program is intended only for parents whose children are enrolled in the Middle School Re-entry Program.  

     

    Parent Panelists:
    Our parent panelists are FSYF Board members whose children attended school in the DC area.

    This program's goal is to help FS teens adapt to life in the U.S.  Join us to explore American teen social and cultural norms and share tips for managing and overcoming any difficulties you may face. We'll do a fun interactive project to facilitate discussion about the challenges facing TCKs and meet with our panel of teen mentors who have successfully navigated re-entry.  

    A light dinner will be served.  This program is intended only for teens entering high school.

    Join FSYF for the Lion King on the lawn at Strathmore!


    FSYF's Monthly Family Meet-up will be take place at the Comcast Xfinity Outdoor Film Festival hosted by the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, MD.  The movie on Saturday is the Lion King. We will meet at 7:30 to save seats before the show - just look for the FSYF sign. There are also pre-show activities and places to purchase snacks. This is a great time to catch up with other families in the DC area before the school year begins.

    Time:       7:30pm - Gates open. Movie begins at dusk.

This event is free of charge and you do not need to be a FSYF member to attend. The picnic is a fun afternoon of classic games, face painting, good food and great company! It is an opportunity to make new friends and reconnect  with old ones.

      We'll provide the burgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers and beverages. 

    Please bring a side dish or dessert to share.

    Annual College Workshop for Parents and Teens

    Join us on Saturday, September 29, 2018 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm to learn about the college search and application process from an expert with years of experience working with Foreign Service youth. Our presenterRebecca Grappo is an international educational consultant and founder of RNG International. This workshop is a great opportunity, even if college applications are a few years away. The list below is a sample of the topics covered. 
    • How to incorporate Foreign Service experiences into an effective essay 
    • What are admissions officers looking for 
    • Interrupted curriculum & extra-curricular activities
    • Teacher recommendations 
    • Planning college visits from overseas 
    • Testing 
    • When to apply early decision

    • Planning a gap year, and more....

    Come with Questions and Leave with Answers! Lunch provided. The workshop will be held at Oakwood Falls Church (501 Roosevelt Blvd, Falls Church, VA 22044). The cost is $15 per person for FSYF members and $30 per person for non-members.
